Utopia Kale Game Crop Mix is a cross between black mustard and wild kale.
This a very fast growing crop mix is sown in July and will produce a mature crop of excellent cover in November. Cost for the 2016 season is €40.00/.40Ha pack (1Ac) delivered. Sown for the first time in our trials it has proved itself to be a winner already. Not to be sown in the field until early July because it goes to seed if sown earlier. Sow in pheasant pens in April as it is only required for feeding for the poults as they grow and will never get a chance to mature because the pheasants will devour it as it comes.
The crop in this photo, taken in the middle of October, was planted on 06 July 2013. It was well over 3 feet tall and still growing at the time. This crop was mixed with John’s Delight and while the Utopia came very well, it did smother some of the other seeds but this could be due to sowing the Utopia a bit too heavy. Having said that you can clearly see that there is a lot of mustard and many other varieties of John’s Delight after coming through and producing seed. I have no doubt that this will hold pheasants during the winter.
Utopia was also sown in our pheasant pens in April 2013 and the seven-week-old birds just loved it when we put them in. They devoured it as it grew and it also kept them amused with less time for feather pecking. When we put the pheasants into the pen in mid-June, the Utopia contained a certain amount of caterpillars and other insects and they were also very beneficial to the poults.
