Description
The 12 native species included in our Native Species Perennial Pollinator Wildflower Meadow will attract all kinds of insects, butterflies, moths and, of course, bees.
This is a very expensive mix but it will turn into a permanent meadow after the first year. Don’t be disappointed because the colour will not be as striking as our standard wildflower meadow which contains annuals and perennials. This one contains only perennials and will still be somewhat colourful like a traditional hay meadow of years gone by. It will be beautiful in its own way and should attract all the traditional hay meadow insect, moth, grasshopper and butterfly life. The 12 native wildflower species in our Native Species Perennial Pollinator Wildflower Meadow will attract insects, butterflies, moths and bees.
Knapweed above included in this meadow hosts a huge amount of aphids and is one of the favourite host plants of the froghopper or spittlebug larvae identified by what is commonly known as the Cuckoo Spit. The term cuckoo spit refers to a foamy substance that appears on a variety of plants during the late spring and early summer. Despite the name, it does not actually come from a bird, but is created by a small insect called a froghopper which is also known as a ‘spittlebug’. The name originates from the coinciding dates of the appearance of the foamy substance on plants and the arrival of the cuckoo. The cuckoo itself does not actually spit.
This Native Species Perennial Wildflower Meadow will take 1 year to establish and patience is required because you will have absolutely nothing in year one. You need to keep it cut back to ground level during its first year in order for it to mature and get established. In year two it will be established and the only maintenance required will be to keep noxious weeds out of it and cut in back at the end of the autumn and remove the cuttings. Before sowing, the same ground preparation and criteria applies as for the wildflower meadow but very different treatment then during its first growing year. See Sowing and Maintenance Guidelines.
Contains 12 native species: Birdsfoot Trefoil, Red Clover, Devil’s Bit Scabious, Field Scabious, Lady’s Bedstraw, Knapweed, Meadowsweet, Oxeye Daisy, Purple Loosestrife, Selfheal, Ragged Robin and Vetch.
This mixture should be sown at the rate of 1.50kgs/0.10Ha.
While this is a Native Species Perennial Pollinator Mix, unfortunately the seed could not be sourced here so the origin is from Bright Seeds UK who are extremely reputable seed suppliers.
