Description
Loved by the honey bee, borage is an absolute must have for beekeepers. It will flower within 8 weeks of being sown and continue all summer.
It will continue to attract honey bees the whole time, making this a popular plant with beekeepers . At a time when we are all trying to support Ireland’s bee population, borage is also very popular with people who want to do their bit to support bee conservation.
While borage is classified as an annual, it will quickly colonise an area and reappear there for years. The stems are a little bristly, but the striking blue flowers of this plant are wonderful for foodies as well as gardeners and beekeepers. You can use borage flowers to garnish summer drinks such as Pimms. They can also add sweetness to fruit salads or indeed any salad. Google and you will find many recipes!
Borage seeds need a fine and fluffy seedbed. It does not need to be deep at all. In fact, 2 to 3 cms deep is perfect. Roll or lightly rake in afterwards. Scattering them on uncultivated soil is not recommended.
