This seed crop is especially blended for GLAS scheme and is pre mixed with the exact ingredients and amounts recommended by the department. It can be sown with all drilling machinery or broadcast but a good seedbed is essential whichever method you use. If broadcast it must be covered with a light power harrowing. Chain harrowing is not good enough because it won’t bury the triticale properly and the crows will take it before it emerges. After sowing it is vital to keep the crows off the plot for 1 week. When the crop emerges you can walk away and wait for the cheque in the post. See Sowing and Maintenance Guidelines for further details.
It is a cheaper mix than our other game crops. Triticale is used instead of oats because triticale is the department’s preferred cereal for the wildbird cover crop and also it does not attract vermin as much as oats. It must be sown each year and can be rotated with kale every 2 years if on the applicant’s plan.
Sowing rate is 88kgs/Ha and is best sown from mid April to early May.
75 kgs Triticale, 7.5 kgs Linseed, 5 kgs Mustard and 0.50 kgs Phacelia as an extra component to add more colour and attract more insect life.

To comply with current EU legislation, (EU Seed Marketing Regulations 2011) we are obliged to include a small amount of forage seed in our wildbird cover mixes. The ingredient chosen is Fodder Radish and the amount is minimal at 25gms/22kg bag. We do not include this on any marketing material but it is listed on the label attached to each bag.
