Autumn-sown John’s Delight produced a few wild pheasant clutches this summer and will provide feed all winter.
I have experimented with autumn sowing for the past few years and found it pretty successful even though all the varieties in the mix do not come through a hard winter. Having said that the triticale and linseed do survive and provide fantastic nesting cover in early spring as well as providing a rich insect life habitat for brood rearing pheasants and partridge.
The photo above is of a recent autumn sown crop taken the following summer. There are a few extra wild flowers from a previous crop in this photo but the end result will be similar when the poppies and corn flower in John’s Delight come into full bloom.
